Costume Design within Film and Theatre

'Matinee'

Fall 2013

Film

A young couple's love story begins at the box office window, quickly evolving into a  business venture that darkens their relationship.  The film takes a close look at their beginning in the 1950's before jumping ahead to the 1980's, delving into their sadness.  Wardrobe was an essential part of the story as the garments were a staple of the time jump; I was not only the Costume Designer but also the Key Costumer with an assistant by my side.

'All Summer in a Day'

Spring 2013

Film
In Ray Bradbury's novel, All Summer in a Day, humans live on Venus where the sun shines once every seven years. Many children growing up in the rainy environment and have only heard stories about the warmth and light of the sun's rays; their clothing reflects the dreary weather that they are constantly bombarded by. One girl stands apart from the rest as she has just moved from Earth to Venus and grew up in the sunlight. She is desperate to remain close to the warm tones that she remembers, even while being bullied by her classmates.  I was there as the Set Costumer and as well as Costume Designer.

'Machinal'

Winter 2014

Theatre

A young woman living in a mechanical society of the 1920's wants to have her voice heard amidst the chaos, but feels it is her duty to marry a wealthy man.  Her suffocating world changes when she is brought to a seedy speakeasy and meets a tempting young man.  Their affair not only brings about passion and heartbreak, but also murder and the electric chair in this expressionistic drama.  The color palette was black and white with an accent of a sickly green  to better illustrate the uneasiness of the characters.

'Cabaret'

Summer 2013

Theatre

While Cabaret has been done many times before, the music and personalities are able to bring out the creativity in everyone involved.  As I was designing for children and young adults, many were not comfortable to be dressed in the typical scantily clad typical Kit Kat Club costumes so I needed to design costumes that suggested promiscuity while remaining modest.  The Emcee also wanted to have a different spin in this tale, ending up in a women's blazer with slim fit trousers.

'The Foreigner'

Summer 2013

Theatre

An introvert unwillingly stumbles into an eccentric bed and breakfast.  This man tricks every person into thinking he cannot speak their language and begins to hear their deepest secrets.  The costumes are loosely 1950's and designed with a reflective personality in mind.  While I did keep in mind the social statuses, I also wanted to have the reveal of the KKK members be one of the most dramatic moments of the show.

'12 Angry Women'

Summer 2013

Theatre

In this adaptation of 12 Angry Men, the personalities of each woman was the crucial element of the plotline.  12 women are faced with deciding the fate of an accused murderer and while 11 think that he is guilty, that 1 remaining juror begins to sway their opinions.  Their costumes not only had to signify their status through silhouette, but also through texture and the variation of accessories.

'Election Day'

Fall 2012

Theatre

Josh Tobiessen has recently brought to life relatable characters in the midst of the political season.  Just when one young couple have reached a peaceful state of their relationship, a demanding politician knocks on their door.  In a strange turn of events involving a nosy sister, handcuffs, illegal substances, and a blown up car, the lives of the five characters in this show will never be the same.  I brought in the dominating reds and blues for this show for the patriotic characters while the dazed and confused hippies were in earth tones and soft lines.
